Benefits of Coaching
Coaching is a powerful tool to help you become the best that you can be. The testimonials show how other coachees have benefited from my coaching. The benefits of 1:1 individualised coaching are often easy to see, but might be more difficult to measure because people come to coaching with different challenges and desire different outcomes.
Recent published research has demonstrated some of the benefits of coaching healthcare and other public sector professionals.
Coaching healthcare leaders increased goal attainment, solution-focused thinking, leadership self-efficacy, perspective-taking capacity, self-insight, and resilience, whilst reducing stress and anxiety.
Coaching physicians decreased emotional exhaustion and burnout, and increased resilience and quality of life.
Coaching student nurses in emotional intelligence led to a greater experiences of resilience, more empathy and compassion, and improved non-technical skills.
Coaching undergraduate students reduced academic burnout.
Executive/life coaching of first year medical students increased self-efficacy regarding stress management and control, with 41% of students reporting decreased stress, and 86% recommending the programme.
Coaching police officers improved work-related stress management.
Coaching nurses and physicians in from the same team leads to improved nurse-physician teamwork dynamics
In the organisational setting, research has also demonstrated benefits of coaching.
One meta-analysis has identified significant positive effects on all outcomes, concluding that coaching is an effective intervention in organisations.
Research into Executive coaching demonstrated that it was effective across all levels of evaluation. 73% of participants stated they achieved their goals “very effectively” or “extremely effectively,” as did 54% of the relevant stakeholders. When calculating the financial benefits of coaching (return on investment), the financial benefit to the organisation was 5.7 times the costs of the coaching programme.
A qualitative study identified that coaching in the workplace provides a unique space, creating a safe environment to address issues such as personal attributes, cognitions and emotions, with the result being enhanced well-being and improved performance at organisational and individual level.
The benefits that you personally might gain depend a lot on what you put into it and how engaged you are with the coaching journey. I can't promise that coaching will change your life, and cannot be held accountable for any decisions or outcomes arising from coaching. What I can promise is that I will do my utmost best to help you achieve those outcomes. Coaching successes are driven by you though, and the more that you put in the more you are likely to get out.

Coaching is an investment into your future. Studies in the organisational context indicate that the benefits are at least five times greater than the investment, and my testimonials show how I have helped others. What would be the cost to you of not being at your best?
The first 30 minute meeting is free. In this meeting we will discuss how we may work together. The cost of coaching will depend on what you require, how many meetings and over what time. Everyone is different, and my coaching is bespoke and tailored to each individual.
As a guide, someone looking for career coaching will typically need 6 meetings lasting an hour each, after the initial free 30 minute meeting. The total cost for that would be £950. Individual one hour sessions are typically charged at £175 per hour.

The coaching relationship underpins my coaching. The relationship is essential for success. In coaching I fundamentally see you as striving for and being capable of becoming the best that you can be. Coaching then is a shared journey where you are the expert in being you, and I am a participant in your growth journey. Together, we form a relationship that supports your achievements and progress. You set the agenda, and we will discuss whatever matters to you.
However, I do not see myself as a passive bystander in the coaching relationship. Listening is a key aspect of coaching, but there is more. I will ask questions, point out patters and inconsistencies, and challenge you to notice your actions and assumptions. Expect to be challenged!
For me the notion of choice is a key aspect of human existence. Whilst it may not be possible to change external factors, it is possible to choose how one responds to them, how one thinks, feels, behaves, and who one is. Each person constructs their own unique meaning in life. Inherent in this view is an appreciation that people can and do change, and that different contexts lead to different choices potentially setting up an internal conflict. Choosing one's own paths in life is incredibly empowering, but at the same time also scary because it means having to make those choices, take responsibility for the outcomes, and accept things outside of one's control. Coaching helps you recognise the choices that you have, and supports you in making those choices. It also helps you recognise where you don't have choices, and helps you find a way of accepting that.
Everyone is a unique individual with their own view of the world. This means that other unique individuals might have a different view of the world than I, although of course we all influence each other and create socially-constructed context-dependent meaning. So one aspect of successful human relationships is accepting, appreciating, valuing, and celebrating the different views, rather than judging things as right or wrong. Coaching can help develop a pluralist view of human interactions. I have a postmodern view of the world, recognising that hard truths no longer exist - instead, as a society we socially create what we deem to be the truth. Of course, different societies in different eras create different truths, this makes it hard to exist in a world where truth and knowledge are no longer just about hard facts.
Identities and narratives are a key part of my coaching. I don't think we have just one identity. I think we all have multiple identities, and that these identities are based on the stories that we construct about ourselves based on our interaction with others. My coaching then helps people identify and appraise their narratives and identities, and develop new ones that are best suited to the reality or desired future. You might hear me use the terms narratives and identities in coaching, but you are just as likely to hear me ask "what's your mind saying" or "what does this say about the kind of person you are", or "what kind of a person do you need to be".
Whilst narratives and identities might require deep exploration, my coaching is also practically orientated for when the goal is already clearly know. Here I work with a solution-focused approach that taps into what you are already doing to deliver more of what you desire.
I don't offer psychometric instruments, preferring to work in a non-judgemental manner, with a view that change is possible, and that being human is more complex than just being of a certain "type".
My coaching often deals with the big questions in life, such as who I am, what do I want out of life, and where is my life going. Sometimes these are obvious at the start of coaching, and sometimes they become important during the coaching meetings.
- I have an enjoyable and successful NHS career. I face the same challenges you might do also, including burn out, major illness, bullying, misalignment of values, and difficult career decisions. I have developed my own ways of dealing with the pressures of working in the NHS, and hope to help you do the same.
- I know about health, research, teaching, training, leadership, teamwork, and diversity, as well as coaching. I have a wide range of experiences that enable me to understand the world that you move in.
- I have the right training to support you with coaching. I have a formal coaching qualification, and am a licensed career coach. I engage in ongoing professional development as a coach, including with regular coaching supervision.
- I specialise in and am experienced in coaching doctors.
- My coaching is focused on solutions, it looks to the future, and it aims to help you develop as a whole person. In coaching we will probably talk about emotional as well as technical aspects of your career, and look at all aspects of your life and not just the work. You set the agenda, whatever it may be.
- I am flexible in the type of coaching techniques that I use. Sometimes you may need me more as a mentor than a coach, and if that is the case we will agree on a change in how we work and I will continue to be able to help you. My coaching isn't just someone who listens to you - I will ask you questions, and challenge you to become the best that you can.
- You deal with me directly, and only me. You decide if I am the right person to help you, you choose how we work, how often and for how long. I don't write any routine coaching report about you to anyone else, nor are my interactions with you influenced by anyone else's agenda.
